On December 12th the European Film Awards will be given once again. The European Film Academy (EFA) combines over 2.000 European film professionals working in the film industry with the same goal: promoting the European film culture. Screenwriters, producers, directors, cameramen and actors will be recognized in categories ranging from short films to the best newcomers.
However, for editors, only one collective prize, the "Prix d'Excellence”, will be awarded by the Academy which, this year for example, must decide whether the editing of the movie "Vincere" is better than the make-up of "Baader Meinhof Komplex".
We believe that by this practice the Academy does not recognize the essence and meaning of the film professionals' work. For this reason, we are requesting the EFA to reintroduce the award category for European Editor and European Production Designer.
Four years ago the European Film Academy already recognized outstanding editing as an essential basic element of the film medium with their award of 2004. Since that time we can no longer talk about recognition and appreciation but rather about the disregard of the European Film Academy as pertains to film editing. That film editing brings an important contribution to the entire work as an invisible art in the background is precisely the reason why the editors need a public presence which extends beyond the profession proper.
With this letter we are calling on film workers in the film industry to rally with our claims and to support our initiative which we carry out in their name. We are calling for the implementation of the award category for European Editors in order to allow the European Film Academy to approach the editing industry with due attention.
